UPDATED: Looking for Volunteers & Performers!

Over on our Volunteer information page, we've listed when we'll need volunteers, what we'll need them to do, and how to get in touch with us if you're interested in volunteering. Here is some additional information about WHO we're looking for, and the people and groups that may want to consider becoming involved:

Sports Teams: we're looking for school-affilitted and community sports teams that may be willing to spend a Saturday helping us out. We promise to feed you!

Corporate Groups: we will offer a discounted rate on a Corporate Hole Sponsorship if you're company sends a group of employees out to volunteer on the day of the event!

College Sororities: many sororities require that their members fulfill volunteer requirements. This is a great opportunity for sororities from Syracuse University and other local colleges!

Church Groups: religious ed students (especially students who have to complete a certain number of volunteer hours prior to making their confirmation!) are welcome to spend the day with us!

Race for the Cure (R) Teams: do you plan on joining a team and participating in the CNY Race for the Cure (R) on May 14th? Why not get together with your team again in September and volunteer at our golf tournament?

Oncology Nurses/Cancer Treatment Teams: it would be incredible if we could get a group of local doctors and nurses who specialize in treating breast cancer patients to volunteer at the event!

Volunteer Duties:

  • Assisting with organization and set-up on Friday, September 23rd (the day before the tournament). We'll only need a handful of volunteers for an hour or two the day before but any help will be appreciated!
  • Setting up and decorating the clubhouse in preparation for the cocktail reception following the tournament on the day of the event.
  • Placing hole sponsorship signs at various holes.
  • Greeting golfers in the parking lot and transporting golf bags to designated carts.
  • Working the registration table: checking golfers in, handing out necessary materials, selling 50/50 raffle tickets, accepting and logging donations, writing donation receipts, etc.
  • Running the putting contest on the putting green.
  • Organizing and setting up the prize table.
  • Collecting and tallying score cards.
  • Selling prize table tickets.
And probably other last-minute duties, too. Please note: only volunteers age 18 or older will be permitted to drive golf carts!

Calling All Performers...

We are looking for a band to entertain golfers between the time that the tournament ends and the last golfer returns to the clubhouse and the beginning of the award ceremony - so approximately 30 to 45 minutes. We may ask the band to perform during the cocktail reception as well.

Please email nicchenet@gmail.com if you have a band of your own, or can suggest a great local band. We will provide lunch and a drink (non-alcoholic) for each volunteer, and will invite the band to have a drink and some light food after their performance.

In other news...

The committee has been invited to go LIVE on air on the Jim Reith radio show on AM 570 WSYR and FM 106.9 in early September to promote the golf event! We'll post the date and time that we'll be on in September, so you can all turn up your radios and listen!

Local support for our event has already been overwhelming - we can't wait to raise thousands of dollars, get in a great day of golf, and party on September 24th!

Who's going to win Best Dressed Foursome?

It's never too early to start planning your foursome's outfits for the Rally for the Cure (CNY) golf event in September!!

Here are some suggestions for awesome outfits...remember, the best dressed foursome will win a prize!

Any of the great golf shirts on ShopKomen.com: some are on sale NOW! ShopKomen also has a great selection of men's tee shirts, youth shirts and apparel, and awesome accessories (like Pink Ribbon "Tattoos" and wristbands) as well as golf shirts and sweaters for the ladies!

The Breast Cancer Site Store also offers great clothing and accessories.

Think Pink: we encourage you to wear something pink - a hat, a golf shirt, pink socks, pink knickers, a pink feather boa...the possibilities are endless. Men - this means YOU, too. Ladies love a man in pink!

We also encourage you to bring items like streamers, ribbons, pom poms, etc. and decorate your golf cart! (Nothing permanent, please! We have to return the carts in the shape that we found them in!)

The idea behind the Rally for the Cure (R) CNY is to have fun and connect with other people that have been touched by breast cancer. We also want to celebrate the women in our lives that have battled breast cancer - those women that have won their battle, and those who have not. It may sound a little silly to ask participants to dress up and wear pink and decorate their golf cart, but remember - - it's for an incredible cause!

Are YOU Passionately Pink for the Cure (R)?

Both Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R) and the CNY affiliate have GREAT websites, and if you take the time to search through them, you'll see that there are countless ways to get involved right here in CNY. Of course, the #1 way to get involved in the fight for a cure is to participate in the Rally for the Cure (R) CNY golf tournament in September, but in the meantime, if you're not interested or unable to participate in the May 14th Race for the Cure (R), there's lots of other ways that you can become "Passionately Pink for the Cure (R)!

The Passionately Pink website has an excellent "Ideas" page, where you can get a glimpse of how other people are getting involved across the country. Some of my favorite ideas include:

Starting a Passionately Pink Book Club: I am almost finished with Nancy G. Brinker's book, Promise Me. I wish that I had more time to finish it! Nancy G. Brinker is the sister of the late Susan G. Komen, and she has dedicated her life to finding a cure for breast cancer. Her entire life - everything she does! - is to honor her late sister. The story is an incredible memoir of Nancy's life with Susan, but it also features the stories of both breast cancer patients - some who survived, and some who did not - as well as factual information about the disease. Keep tissues handy; you might cry! I think starting a book club in your area and kicking things off by reading Promise Me is a great way to raise awareness of this cancer among your friends! Once you've finished the book, you can get started on other related books, like:

Art.Rage.Us: Art and Writing by Women with Breast Cancer by Terry Tempest Williams

A Single Thread by Marie Bostwick

Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos

If you do a search for "breast cancer novels" in Google, you'll find a number of non-fiction books that feature a character dealing with breast cancer.

"Pink Out" Your Office: I could never get away with this at MY office, but it's a fun idea! Pick a month (or just a week, if you're office is mostly male) and go pink with decorations, signs, and breast cancer educational materials. The month of October - which we all know as Breast Cancer Awareness Month - is the obvious choice, but anytime is a good time to "Pink Out" - - maybe each co-worker that's interested in decorating their cubicle or a part of the office can make a $5 donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R) in order to participate!

Pink Party: looking for an excuse to throw a party? Make it a Pink Party! It's simple: the theme is pink, so ask guests to dress appropriately. Invest in some pink decorations, serve pink foods (pink cupcakes or "Pink Ribbon"-shaped cookies, strawberries, pink candies, etc.) Collect donations for the cure at the door and don't let guests leave without a goody bag and some educational materials!

There's endless ideas available on their website!

Rally for the Cure (R) CNY Update!

So far, we've recruited an incredible photographer and invited local massage therapists to attend the event! Our committee is meeting this week to discuss registration fees, etc. but we need YOUR HELP to start promoting the event. Soon, registration forms will be mailed out to friends and family but if you or someone you know is interested in golfing and/or sponsoring a hole, we'd ask that you EMAIL US with your address so that we can send you the necessary forms.

You can also promote the event by sharing a link to this website on your Facebook profile! As the event gets closer, we'll create a Facebook Event and send out some invites but in the meantime, PLEASE post a link to this site on your profile and let your friends know what we're looking for golfers, hole sponsors, prize donors, and volunteers!! Here's an example of a Facebook status to get you started:

Calling all golfers & those touched by breast cancer! The Rally for the Cure (R) CNY Golf Tournament will be September 24th at Radisson Greens Golf Course in B'ville! If you're interested in participating, visit the website: Rally4theCureCNY.blogspot.com!

2011 Race for the Cure (R) is May 14th!

If you're interested in getting involved in raising money for a breast cancer cure, but can't wait until the Rally for the Cure (R) golf tournament in September, you're in luck! The 2011 Race for the Cure (R) will be held Saturday, May 14th at the NYS Fairgrounds.

The event features a 5K competitive run, a 5K Fun run/walk, and even a 5Kwheelchair race. Registration is just $30 and that includes a tee shirt and race bib. The Race for the Cure (R) is a great event, and it's so much fun!

Looking to join a Race for the Cure (R) team?

Team Go Pink or Go Home! raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research last year, and our fundraising goal this year is $4,000. Our team has runners AND walkers, and we'd love it if you joined us. To join our team, go to our team page and click the "Join Team Go Pink or Go Home!" button on the right.  We're hoping to order special team tee shirts this year, and if you do join our team, please send an email to Joseph.Torrillo@gmail.com and let us know that you joined and would be interested in ordering a tee shirt! Hopefully the cost of each shirt will be under $10. The sooner you join our team, the sooner you can begin raising money for a cure! There's no obligation to fundraise if you join, though.

To start your own team, visit the CNY Race for the Cure (R) website.

Who are we running for?

All of the members of Team Go Pink or Go Home! have been touched by breast cancer in some way. We're all proud to wear tags on the backs of our shirts during the race with the names of the women we're honoring so that everyone can see who we're running for.

Wanted: Ideas for a team tee shirt!

If you plan on joining our team and have a great idea for how our team tee shirts should look, send an email to Joseph.Torrillo@gmail.com! We're in need of ideas!
