Heads Up Golfers!

Many of the people who have committed to golfing are unable to send in registration forms ahead of time - if that's the case for you and your foursome, please email nicchenet@gmail.com this week with the names of those in your foursome so that we can update our roster. Thank you!

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Attention Golfers!

We're still accepting registration forms - - the "loose" deadline is September 15th; however, if we still have several spots to fill we will extend that. It's understood that many people wait until the last minute to send in registration forms, but please help the committee stay organized by sending in your forms and checks as soon as possible. This will help the committee, volunteers, AND the wonderful people at Radisson Greens Golf Course that are helping us host this event.

Remember, you are also welcome to attend only the cocktail reception, where we will be serving light food and drinks, recognizing our sponsors, and handing out special prizes, including:

Nike putter - estimated value between $150 and $200!

Cleveland golf bag

Ladies jewelry, courtesy of HSN & designer Heidi Daus

Golf accessories for men and ladies, including tools and towels

Breast Cancer-themed Wilson golf balls

DVDs and books written and donated by author & survivor Kris Carr

Two one-of-a-kind bracelets designed by the talented Amy TenEyck

The top 50 golfers will receive a Titleist Pink Ribbon golf ball, and all participants will receive a goodie bag courtesy of Rally for the Cure (R) which includes a subscription of your choosing to a Conde Nast magazine, a $10 coupon, and more!

A few people have asked "What's on the menu?" Here's a sneak peek, just to get you salivating...

Marinated Chicken Skewers
Bruschetta
Coconut Shrimp
Cupcakes
Special "Rally for the Cure (R) CNY Cocktail"

...and more!

And, of course, there WILL be beer.

Several folks have asked about Traci Zimmer, as we are also raising money for a memorial fund in her name. Traci passed away in July of 2010 following a battle with Lymphoma and Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Traci was an incredible artist, and her paintings often reflected her ordeal with BC. She was an educator and tennis coach in the Pulaski School District, and she touched the lives of countless people. Her memory lives on through her memorial fund and on her Facebook page, where former students, friends and family members often post personal messages to her. Individuals wishing to donate in Traci's honor can do so by writing a check made out to "Traci Zimmer Memorial Fund" and mailing it to:

Nicole Chenet
3075 Amberlea Lane
Baldwinsville, NY 13027

Remember, you can also donate to Rally for the Cure (R), the CNY Chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R) and the Traci Zimmer Mem. Fund even if you're unable to attend the event!

Many have asked just how much of your registration fee will be going to Rally for the Cure (R). A mandatory $20 from each participant fee must be earmarked for RFC - - any additional funds raised after the committee takes care of venue-related costs will be donated to RFC and the Traci Zimmer Memorial Fund. We have chosen to keep the funds we raise local, and so individuals right here in the Central NY area will benefit from YOUR support! We will share the total dollar amount donated to both organizations following the event. The more participants we have, the more money we will be able to raise, and the more women and families we will be able to help.

Last week, I had the pleasure of volunteering at the Susan G. Komen booth at the NYS Fair. The goal of  Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R) is to EDUCATE men and women about breast health. We do sell some small items in an effort to raise funds, but the #1 focus of volunteers is educating the people who stop by the booth to spin the education wheel, watch the video of the most recent Race for the Cure (R) and pick up educational materials. MANY people shared their stories, asked questions, donated, and thanked the volunteers for being there. For anyone looking to get involved with a worthy organization, I recommend taking four hours out of one day next Summer and volunteering with Komen at the fair.

Of course, we need volunteers for the 9/24 tournament, too! The wonderful staff at CNY Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery will be there, as well as a few other incredible individuals, but we welcome any additional people who want to help! Please email nicchenet@gmail.com to sign up.

We encourage everyone to join us on September 24th. If you're on the fence about spending $100 for a day of golf, food, fun, and prizes, consider this: because monies raised will stay local, your contribution may one day support someone in your life, whether it be a co-worker, a neighbor, a sister, a mother, or even yourself.

Registration Update

Registration forms are *almost* complete, and will be mailed out to those on our mailing list the week of the 22nd. If you are not yet on our list, but would like to be, please email nicchenet@gmail.com or visit our Facebook page.

Forms will be available to download and print here and on NicoleChenet.com. The deadline for registration has yet to be determined, but we anticipate spots for both golf and the cocktail reception filling up quickly, so please make sure you register as soon as possible.

For Your Information

The fee for each golfer is $100. $20 from each participant's entry fee must go to Rally for the Cure (R). Each golfer will be required to write a check for that amount to Rally for the Cure (R) with our Event ID # 49044 in the check Memo line

Participants will then be required to write a second check in the amount of $80 payable to Nicole E. Chenet. Please write "Rally for the Cure (R)" in the Memo line. This portion of the participant fee will be used to offset costs associated with this event, and any remaining funds will be donated to the Traci Zimmer Memorial Fund.

SO - each golfer must submit two checks, one in the amount of $20 payable to Rally for the Cure (R) and a second in the amount of $80 payable to Nicole E. Chenet. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we must adhere to Rally for the Cure (R) guidelines!

Those attending only the evening cocktail reception should make their $40 checks payable to Nicole E. Chenet.

Those who wish to make additional donations to Rally for the Cure (R), Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R) or the Traci Zimmer Memorial Fund can certainly do so by sending a check made payable to one of the above organizations when submitting their registration forms. We'll also be accepting checks and cash donations on the day of the event.

Following the event, we will update this website with the total amount raised for Rally for the Cure (R) and the Traci Zimmer Memorial Fund.

How YOU Can Help

We are seeking volunteers to assist the day before the event in the evening, as well as on the day of the event itself. We have a handful of volunteers so far but we need YOU to donate your time and creativity to help us make this event as awesome as possible! To volunteer, please email nicchenet@gmail.com. We will provide lunch to all volunteers.

We also need prizes for our prize table! If you are willing to donate prize items, or would like to volunteer to procure prize items, please email nicchenet@gmail.com as soon as possible. Suggestions for prize items include: gift cards to local restaurants and retailers, golf apparel and other items, sports memorabilia, bottles of wine, gift baskets, and jewelry. These are just a few suggestions! Any type of prize item will be appreciated, especially if it is breast cancer awareness-themed in some way.

We also need sponsors to sponsor holes, the beverage cart, participant golf carts, and our scoreboard! Please visit the Hole Sponsorship page to learn more. Please note: it will be a minimum of $100 to sponsor a hole, and we may place more than one hole sponsor per hole if necessary

The support of our friends and family will be what make this event a success, so please consider donating prize items, volunteering, or taking advantage of sponsorship opportunities!

Prize Update

Today an incredible package arrived in the mail from Rally for the Cure (R) and HSN (R) - The Home Shopping Network!

HSN (R) designer Heidi Daus have donated three beautiful pieces of jewelry to each Rally for the Cure (R) event this year. From the top: a beautiful vintage-style tennis bracelet, a brooch - which can also be worn as a pendant! - with multi-colored stones, and a beautiful cocktail ring.

These items will either be given as prizes or auctioned off (all proceeds to our local chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R)) at the September 24th event.

THANK YOU to Rally for the Cure (R) and HSN (R) for this generous - and sparkly - donation.

Komen CNY Chapter Seeking Volunteers for Race Day

The CNY chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R) still needs 157 volunteers to assist them on Saturday, May 14th! Volunteer duties range from handing out race bibs to participants to staffing education booths. This is a great opportunity for people who want to be involved, but cannot commit to running or walking in the actual race. To view volunteer duties, click HERE. When you're ready to sign up, click the blue "Volunteer!" button on the same page.

I had the pleasure of volunteering with Komen at the NYS Fair last summer. My role was to man their education booth, where I interacted with hundreds of fairgoers, handed out educational materials and spoke with people about breast health. It was an incredible experience. The day of the Race for the Cure (R) is just like that: THOUSANDS of people, all united for one cause, with music, snacks, dancing, and more. Hopefully, the weather this year will be a little warmer and much less windy!

FYI

I will be promoting the September 24th Rally for the Cure (R) CNY Golf Tournament during the Radisson garage sale on Saturday, May 7th. I also plan on selling some small items, including books, desk lamps, and other odds and ends, and donating a portion of the proceeds to our local Komen chapter.

If anyone has items they would like to sell, but you live outside of the Radisson Community or just have plans on garage sale day, please let me know - I'd be happy to sell them for you! Items can be dropped off at my home between now and Friday, May 6th - please organize items and post a price on the item before dropping them off. Also, please let me know if you're willing to donate a portion of your proceeds to breast cancer research.

I am still looking for a couple of volunteers to help me promote the tournament during the garage sale, so please let me know if you're available!

You can email me at nicchenet@gmail.com to arrange a drop-off of your items to be sold for, or to volunteer. Thank you!

Last Call! Race for the Cure, Saturday May 14th!

I've been pretty persistent on Facebook, and I am going to make one final push here too! Team Go Pink or Go Home! needs SIX additional members in order to be considered an "official" team...the deadline for registration is approaching [just a few days left!] and we are hoping to recruit enough members to become "official." Otherwise - we will still participate, but will not be recognized as an actual team this year.

You can run OR walk - either a 5K [3.2 miles] competitive run or a 1-mile walk or 1-mile run. It is $30 to register, and you get a free tee shirt [mine just came in the mail and the design is great this year] and a race bib. You can pick up lots of free goodies at the race! The atmosphere is incredible, and it is always so much fun.

To register, please click HERE - then click the pink "Join Go Pink or Go Home!" button on the right-hand side of the page, right below the picture of our 2010 team.

I hope you can join us and help us make it "official" this year!

Volunteers Needed on May 7th!

This week has been a busy one in terms of planning for the tournament goes - in fact, we've finalized the menu for the cocktail reception, and are in the process of tying up loose ends related to the cost of registration for those golfing, as well as those only attending the reception. Planning a tournament is like planning a wedding [or at least I imagine it to be!] and it seems like there are endless things to organize and plan.

I am looking for up to three volunteers who will be willing to assist me on Saturday, May 7th during the Radisson Community garage sale - the goal is to set up a table in a prime location somewhere and promote the tournament. We'll have registration materials available, will be accepting donations, and will be letting people know about the tournament in general. I will provide lunch for volunteers [and maybe even buy you a cocktail...]

If you're available, please email nicchenet@gmail.com. THANK YOU!

WANTED: Carpenter!

I am looking for someone who is willing to make and donate special pink tee boxes for the tournament. Ideally, the tee boxes would be very simple in construction and, of course, would be painted pink. If you or someone you know would be able to build 18 tee boxes and would also be willing to donate them, please contact nicchenet@gmail.com. If necessary, we can assemble volunteers to do the painting, but it would incredible if we could find someone who is able to build AND paint.

Stay tuned for registration information!

Cake, Cookies & Yummy Goodies Wanted!

We recently spoke with the caterer at Radisson Greens, and are in the midst of finalizing the menu for the cocktail reception...we will be serving light appetizers and drinks as well as a special pink non-alcoholic drink!

We are looking for people who might be willing to make and donate cakes, cookies, and other dessert goodies. You don't have to be a professional baker - - just someone who is willing to make (or purchase, if you're absolutely baking-challenged like myself) cakes, cookies, and other desserts, preferably that jive with the pink theme of the tournament!

Ideally, we would have three cakes [the 13 x 9 size that you would typically make at home] and at least 100 cookies, plus other treats. If you or someone you know is willing to make and donate any of the above, please email nicchenet@gmail.com.

Stay tuned for official registration information!!

Also - - don't forget to sign up for the Race for the Cure! The race will be Saturday, May 14th at the NYS Fairgrounds. You can join Team Go Pink or Go Home! here, or start your own team. Runners AND walkers welcome.

UPDATED: Looking for Volunteers & Performers!

Over on our Volunteer information page, we've listed when we'll need volunteers, what we'll need them to do, and how to get in touch with us if you're interested in volunteering. Here is some additional information about WHO we're looking for, and the people and groups that may want to consider becoming involved:

Sports Teams: we're looking for school-affilitted and community sports teams that may be willing to spend a Saturday helping us out. We promise to feed you!

Corporate Groups: we will offer a discounted rate on a Corporate Hole Sponsorship if you're company sends a group of employees out to volunteer on the day of the event!

College Sororities: many sororities require that their members fulfill volunteer requirements. This is a great opportunity for sororities from Syracuse University and other local colleges!

Church Groups: religious ed students (especially students who have to complete a certain number of volunteer hours prior to making their confirmation!) are welcome to spend the day with us!

Race for the Cure (R) Teams: do you plan on joining a team and participating in the CNY Race for the Cure (R) on May 14th? Why not get together with your team again in September and volunteer at our golf tournament?

Oncology Nurses/Cancer Treatment Teams: it would be incredible if we could get a group of local doctors and nurses who specialize in treating breast cancer patients to volunteer at the event!

Volunteer Duties:

  • Assisting with organization and set-up on Friday, September 23rd (the day before the tournament). We'll only need a handful of volunteers for an hour or two the day before but any help will be appreciated!
  • Setting up and decorating the clubhouse in preparation for the cocktail reception following the tournament on the day of the event.
  • Placing hole sponsorship signs at various holes.
  • Greeting golfers in the parking lot and transporting golf bags to designated carts.
  • Working the registration table: checking golfers in, handing out necessary materials, selling 50/50 raffle tickets, accepting and logging donations, writing donation receipts, etc.
  • Running the putting contest on the putting green.
  • Organizing and setting up the prize table.
  • Collecting and tallying score cards.
  • Selling prize table tickets.
And probably other last-minute duties, too. Please note: only volunteers age 18 or older will be permitted to drive golf carts!

Calling All Performers...

We are looking for a band to entertain golfers between the time that the tournament ends and the last golfer returns to the clubhouse and the beginning of the award ceremony - so approximately 30 to 45 minutes. We may ask the band to perform during the cocktail reception as well.

Please email nicchenet@gmail.com if you have a band of your own, or can suggest a great local band. We will provide lunch and a drink (non-alcoholic) for each volunteer, and will invite the band to have a drink and some light food after their performance.

In other news...

The committee has been invited to go LIVE on air on the Jim Reith radio show on AM 570 WSYR and FM 106.9 in early September to promote the golf event! We'll post the date and time that we'll be on in September, so you can all turn up your radios and listen!

Local support for our event has already been overwhelming - we can't wait to raise thousands of dollars, get in a great day of golf, and party on September 24th!

It's never too early to start planning your foursome's outfits for the Rally for the Cure (CNY) golf event in September!!

Here are some suggestions for awesome outfits...remember, the best dressed foursome will win a prize!

Any of the great golf shirts on ShopKomen.com: some are on sale NOW! ShopKomen also has a great selection of men's tee shirts, youth shirts and apparel, and awesome accessories (like Pink Ribbon "Tattoos" and wristbands) as well as golf shirts and sweaters for the ladies!

The Breast Cancer Site Store also offers great clothing and accessories.

Think Pink: we encourage you to wear something pink - a hat, a golf shirt, pink socks, pink knickers, a pink feather boa...the possibilities are endless. Men - this means YOU, too. Ladies love a man in pink!

We also encourage you to bring items like streamers, ribbons, pom poms, etc. and decorate your golf cart! (Nothing permanent, please! We have to return the carts in the shape that we found them in!)

The idea behind the Rally for the Cure (R) CNY is to have fun and connect with other people that have been touched by breast cancer. We also want to celebrate the women in our lives that have battled breast cancer - those women that have won their battle, and those who have not. It may sound a little silly to ask participants to dress up and wear pink and decorate their golf cart, but remember - - it's for an incredible cause!

Are YOU Passionately Pink for the Cure (R)?

Both Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R) and the CNY affiliate have GREAT websites, and if you take the time to search through them, you'll see that there are countless ways to get involved right here in CNY. Of course, the #1 way to get involved in the fight for a cure is to participate in the Rally for the Cure (R) CNY golf tournament in September, but in the meantime, if you're not interested or unable to participate in the May 14th Race for the Cure (R), there's lots of other ways that you can become "Passionately Pink for the Cure (R)!

The Passionately Pink website has an excellent "Ideas" page, where you can get a glimpse of how other people are getting involved across the country. Some of my favorite ideas include:

Starting a Passionately Pink Book Club: I am almost finished with Nancy G. Brinker's book, Promise Me. I wish that I had more time to finish it! Nancy G. Brinker is the sister of the late Susan G. Komen, and she has dedicated her life to finding a cure for breast cancer. Her entire life - everything she does! - is to honor her late sister. The story is an incredible memoir of Nancy's life with Susan, but it also features the stories of both breast cancer patients - some who survived, and some who did not - as well as factual information about the disease. Keep tissues handy; you might cry! I think starting a book club in your area and kicking things off by reading Promise Me is a great way to raise awareness of this cancer among your friends! Once you've finished the book, you can get started on other related books, like:

Art.Rage.Us: Art and Writing by Women with Breast Cancer by Terry Tempest Williams

A Single Thread by Marie Bostwick

Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos

If you do a search for "breast cancer novels" in Google, you'll find a number of non-fiction books that feature a character dealing with breast cancer.

"Pink Out" Your Office: I could never get away with this at MY office, but it's a fun idea! Pick a month (or just a week, if you're office is mostly male) and go pink with decorations, signs, and breast cancer educational materials. The month of October - which we all know as Breast Cancer Awareness Month - is the obvious choice, but anytime is a good time to "Pink Out" - - maybe each co-worker that's interested in decorating their cubicle or a part of the office can make a $5 donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R) in order to participate!

Pink Party: looking for an excuse to throw a party? Make it a Pink Party! It's simple: the theme is pink, so ask guests to dress appropriately. Invest in some pink decorations, serve pink foods (pink cupcakes or "Pink Ribbon"-shaped cookies, strawberries, pink candies, etc.) Collect donations for the cure at the door and don't let guests leave without a goody bag and some educational materials!

There's endless ideas available on their website!

Rally for the Cure (R) CNY Update!

So far, we've recruited an incredible photographer and invited local massage therapists to attend the event! Our committee is meeting this week to discuss registration fees, etc. but we need YOUR HELP to start promoting the event. Soon, registration forms will be mailed out to friends and family but if you or someone you know is interested in golfing and/or sponsoring a hole, we'd ask that you EMAIL US with your address so that we can send you the necessary forms.

You can also promote the event by sharing a link to this website on your Facebook profile! As the event gets closer, we'll create a Facebook Event and send out some invites but in the meantime, PLEASE post a link to this site on your profile and let your friends know what we're looking for golfers, hole sponsors, prize donors, and volunteers!! Here's an example of a Facebook status to get you started:

2011 Race for the Cure (R) is May 14th!

If you're interested in getting involved in raising money for a breast cancer cure, but can't wait until the Rally for the Cure (R) golf tournament in September, you're in luck! The 2011 Race for the Cure (R) will be held Saturday, May 14th at the NYS Fairgrounds.

The event features a 5K competitive run, a 5K Fun run/walk, and even a 5Kwheelchair race. Registration is just $30 and that includes a tee shirt and race bib. The Race for the Cure (R) is a great event, and it's so much fun!

Looking to join a Race for the Cure (R) team?

Team Go Pink or Go Home! raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research last year, and our fundraising goal this year is $4,000. Our team has runners AND walkers, and we'd love it if you joined us. To join our team, go to our team page and click the "Join Team Go Pink or Go Home!" button on the right.  We're hoping to order special team tee shirts this year, and if you do join our team, please send an email to Joseph.Torrillo@gmail.com and let us know that you joined and would be interested in ordering a tee shirt! Hopefully the cost of each shirt will be under $10. The sooner you join our team, the sooner you can begin raising money for a cure! There's no obligation to fundraise if you join, though.

To start your own team, visit the CNY Race for the Cure (R) website.

Who are we running for?

All of the members of Team Go Pink or Go Home! have been touched by breast cancer in some way. We're all proud to wear tags on the backs of our shirts during the race with the names of the women we're honoring so that everyone can see who we're running for.

Wanted: Ideas for a team tee shirt!

If you plan on joining our team and have a great idea for how our team tee shirts should look, send an email to Joseph.Torrillo@gmail.com! We're in need of ideas!
