Both Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R) and the CNY affiliate have GREAT websites, and if you take the time to search through them, you'll see that there are countless ways to get involved right here in CNY. Of course, the #1 way to get involved in the fight for a cure is to participate in the Rally for the Cure (R) CNY golf tournament in September, but in the meantime, if you're not interested or unable to participate in the May 14th Race for the Cure (R), there's lots of other ways that you can become "Passionately Pink for the Cure (R)!
The Passionately Pink website has an excellent "
Ideas" page, where you can get a glimpse of how other people are getting involved across the country. Some of my favorite ideas include:
Starting a Passionately Pink Book Club: I am almost finished with Nancy G. Brinker's book,
Promise Me. I wish that I had more time to finish it! Nancy G. Brinker is the sister of the late Susan G. Komen, and she has dedicated her life to finding a cure for breast cancer. Her entire life - everything she does! - is to honor her late sister. The story is an incredible memoir of Nancy's life with Susan, but it also features the stories of both breast cancer patients - some who survived, and some who did not - as well as factual information about the disease. Keep tissues handy; you might cry! I think starting a book club in your area and kicking things off by reading
Promise Me is a great way to raise awareness of this cancer among your friends! Once you've finished the book, you can get started on other related books, like:
Art.Rage.Us: Art and Writing by Women with Breast Cancer by Terry Tempest Williams
A Single Thread by Marie Bostwick
Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos
If you do a search for "breast cancer novels" in Google, you'll find a number of non-fiction books that feature a character dealing with breast cancer.
"Pink Out" Your Office: I could never get away with this at MY office, but it's a fun idea! Pick a month (or just a week, if you're office is mostly male) and go pink with decorations, signs, and breast cancer educational materials. The month of October - which we all know as Breast Cancer Awareness Month - is the obvious choice, but anytime is a good time to "Pink Out" - - maybe each co-worker that's interested in decorating their cubicle or a part of the office can make a $5 donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure (R) in order to participate!
Pink Party: looking for an excuse to throw a party? Make it a Pink Party! It's simple: the theme is pink, so ask guests to dress appropriately. Invest in some pink decorations, serve pink foods (pink cupcakes or "Pink Ribbon"-shaped cookies, strawberries, pink candies, etc.) Collect donations for the cure at the door and don't let guests leave without a goody bag and some educational materials!
There's endless ideas available on their website!
Rally for the Cure (R) CNY Update!
So far, we've recruited an incredible photographer and invited local massage therapists to attend the event! Our committee is meeting this week to discuss registration fees, etc. but we need
YOUR HELP to start promoting the event. Soon, registration forms will be mailed out to friends and family but if you or someone you know is interested in golfing and/or sponsoring a hole, we'd ask that you
EMAIL US with your address so that we can send you the necessary forms.
You can also promote the event by sharing a link to this website on your Facebook profile! As the event gets closer, we'll create a Facebook Event and send out some invites but in the meantime,
PLEASE post a link to this site on your profile and let your friends know what we're looking for golfers, hole sponsors, prize donors, and volunteers!! Here's an example of a Facebook status to get you started:
Calling all golfers & those touched by breast cancer! The Rally for the Cure (R) CNY Golf Tournament will be September 24th at Radisson Greens Golf Course in B'ville! If you're interested in participating, visit the website: Rally4theCureCNY.blogspot.com!
Thank you in advance for your support!
